SHARE: NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 1, 2023) – The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) announces members of its Board of Directors for 2023-2024. Members were installed during NASBA’s 116th Annual Meeting, held Oct. 29 – Nov. 1, in New York, NY. Stephanie M. Saunders, CPA, of Virginia Beach, VA, acceded to the office of chair. She formerly served as chair of NASBA’s Uniform Accountancy Act, Relations with Member Boards and Education Committees, and is a past member of NASBA’s Communications and Nominating Committees. Previously, she was a NASBA representative on the Professional Ethics Executive Committee (PEEC), an appointment she held for four years. In addition to her work with NASBA, Saunders served two four-year terms and was a past chair of the Virginia Board of Accountancy, former member of the Virginia Board’s Ethics Committee, and former board member and chair of the Virginia Society of CPAs. Today, she is a shareholder of Saunders & Saunders, which provides tax planning and compliance for individuals and small businesses. Maria E. Caldwell, CPA, of Miami, FL, was elected vice chair. Caldwell, an audit managing director at Deloitte & Touche, has been active with NASBA since 2014 with her appointment to NASBA’s Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Committee. Since that time, she has served as Southeast regional director, treasurer and director-at-large of NASBA. Her appointment to the board of directors holds great significance, as she is the first Hispanic woman to serve. She has also chaired and been a member of several NASBA committees including its Strategic Task Force and Audit, Diversity, Administration & Finance and Enforcement Resource committees. Caldwell served on the Florida Board of Accountancy for 12 years, with two terms as chair. She continues to serve on the Board’s Probable Cause Panel and Education Committee as a former board member. Timothy Egan, CPA, of Darien, CT, was elected Northeast regional director. Egan currently serves as the 2023-2024 chair of the NASBA Standard-Setting and Professional Trends Advisory Committee. He is a past member of NASBA’s Administration and Finance and Audit committees and currently serves on the Connecticut State Board of Accountancy. Prior to his recent retirement from KPMG, Egan served as a global lead audit partner for some of the firm’s largest consumer market, technology, media and telecommunication clients. In his role, he provided support to private and public companies at various stages of development. Other skills and experience include his technical role as one of the firm’s IFRS reviewing partners, serving as a member of the KPMG LLP Partnership Audit Committee, being actively involved in campus recruiting and training and mentoring many KPMG professionals. Dan Vuckovich, CPA, of Great Falls, MT, was elected Mountain regional director and serves on the NASBA Uniform Accountancy Act Committee. He is also a member of the American Institute of CPAs(AICPA), where he serves on the AICPA Council and AICPA Professional Ethics Executive Committee (PEEC). Additionally, he is an active member of the Montana Society of CPAs (MSCPA) where he was board chair from 2006-2007. Vuckovich received the MSCPA’s George D. Anderson Distinguished Service Award in 2017. He was appointed to the Montana State Board of Accountancy in 2014, served as its chair from 2016-2017 and 2021-2023, and is currently a board member. D. Boyd Busby, CPA, of Montgomery, AL, was elected executive director liaison to the NASBA board of directors and appointed as the 2023-2024 chair of the NASBA Executive Directors Committee. He also serves on the Experience, Learn & Earn and ALD task forces. In addition to his participation with NASBA, Busby serves on the board of directors for the Higher Education Partnership, the Better Business Bureau Serving Central and South Alabama, the Alabama Association of Regulatory Boards, the Alabama Educational Leadership Hall of Fame Screening Committee, and the Troy University School of Accountancy’s Advisory Council. Laurie Warwick, CPA, of Ashburn, VA, was elected Middle Atlantic regional director. She currently serves as the 2023-2024 chair of the NASBA Audit Committee and is a past member of its Audit, Regulatory Response and Administration and Finance Committees. Additionally, she has served on the Virginia Board of Accountancy as a member, vice chair and chair. Warwick is a managing director with EY, serving a broad base of industries, inclusive of private equity, healthcare, professional services, and emerging companies. Barry Berkowitz, CPA, of Huntingdon Valley, PA, was elected director-at-large. Berkowitz is the 2023-2024 chair of the NASBA CBT Administration Committee, has served on the NASBA Nominating Committee and was also recently confirmed to represent NASBA on the Auditing Standards Board. He served on the Audit Subcommittee of the CPA Examination and recently concluded a nine-year term on the Board of Examiners, including two years as its chair. He was recently appointed by his CPA state society to serve on the AICPA Council and is a board member of its CPA Foundation. Berkowitz has over 40 years of experience in public accounting, including extensive experience with the real estate and construction industries, HVAC industry, not-for-profit housing communities and HUD audits, in addition to consulting and professional services firms throughout the country. Jeannette P. Smith, CPA, CGMA, of Mission, TX, was elected Southwest regional director, has served on several NASBA committees, including the Communications Committee, and is currently a member of its Administration and Finance Committee. She is also a member and secretary of the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy and is a member and past director-at-large of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. Within the Texas Society, Smith has served on the executive board as treasurer. In addition, she is a past president of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Texas Society of CPA’s and is a member and past council member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Involved in all areas of tax, her expertise includes federal and individual income tax, estate and gift tax, maquiladora consulting and IRS representation. In addition to providing tax services, Smith assists with audits of employee benefit 401-K plans, non-profit organizations, and is involved in providing consulting and accounting services to numerous clients in the region. She is a partner of Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC, managing partner of the Rio Unit and holds the designation of chartered global management accountant. Chandra Lalvani, CPA, of Harrisburg, PA, was elected director-at-large. Lalvani is a member of NASBA’s CPA Examination Review Board and past member of its Diversity, Nominating and Awards committees and the former chair of the Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy. A licensed certified public accountant in Pennsylvania, she is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Her professional affiliations include being the executive vice president of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of Ascend (2007-2009), Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania board member and treasurer (2011-2017), Foundation for Enhancing Communities board member (2014-2019), United Way of the Capital Region executive board member and chair of the DEI task force (2020 – Present) and Harrisburg University Board of Trustees member (2018-Present). With over 30 years of experience providing tax services to organizations operating in the manufacturing and retail industry, Lalvani is a director in tax in the Philadelphia office of PwC US Tax LLP.
