The country is slowly beginning to open back up in full capacity and many of us are planning to return to the office. As we plan to return to the office, there are a few things to keep in mind. We will no longer be working from the privacy of our own homes, where we were able to spread out, work in comfortable clothing and not worry about disrupting our co-workers. However, now that we are returning to a shared space, we must adjust.

First, we must once again adhere to certain office etiquette. Begin by being conscientious of your volume levels. Whether listening to music at your desk or taking calls, be mindful of your co-workers. Keep in mind that they too are trying to get through their to-do list and meet deadlines. Maintaining an indoor voice and keeping computer volume low, is a sign of respect and is a courtesy for those around you.

Secondly, it is important to engage in open and honest communication before issues arise. , It is equally as important to communicate your concerns after an issue has arose. The longer you wait to address an issue, it may become more difficult for those involved to explain their side of the story or to stop the behavior before it reoccurs. Just the same, if someone communicates their concerns to you, it is important to respect their perspective. Invite dialogue, rather than shy away from it. This may lead to a more open and honest workplace culture.

Ready to attend meetings again? Remember to arrive on time and read through the materials that are sent to you ahead of time, including the agenda. In fact, arriving on time is a sign of respect whether you are on your way to a meeting or arriving to the office to begin your workday. Being punctual is a great way to show others that you value your position, the company and the time of others.

As you return to the office, remember to stay safe. Continue to maintain a safe distance from others when possible, avoid handshakes for the time being and familiarize yourself with any new social distancing/safety protocols implemented by your organization.
