    The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) announces members of its Board of Directors for 2024-2025. Members were installed during NASBA’s 117th Annual Meeting, held October 27–30, in Orlando, FL.

    Maria E. Caldwell, CPA, of Miami, FL, acceded to the office of chair. Caldwell has been involved with NASBA since 2014. Since that time, she has served in a variety of leadership capacities within NASBA. She is a former vice chair, Southeast regional director, treasurer and director-at-large of NASBA. Her appointment to the board of directors held great significance, as she was the first Hispanic woman to serve. Caldwell is a former member of NASBA’s Administration and Finance Committee and has served as chair of several committees including the CPE Committee, the Inclusion Committee and the Audit Committee. In addition to her NASBA service, Caldwell served 12 years as a member of the Florida Board of Accountancy, completing two terms as board chairman and chairing several committees including the Probable Cause Panel, Ethics and Rules Committee, the Minority Scholarships and CPE committees. She currently serves on the Probable Cause Panel and the CPE Committee. Caldwell is an audit managing director at Deloitte & Touche, LLP, where she has worked for over 30 years.

    Nicola Neilon, CPA, of Carson City, NV, was elected vice chair. In addition to serving as director-at-large and secretary of the NASBA Board of Directors, Neilon chaired the Uniform Accountancy Act (UAA), Legislative Support, Standards Setting and Professional Trends, and Relations with Member Boards committees. She is a member of NASBA’s Professional Licensure Task Force and Administration and Finance Committee. Neilon was previously a member of the Enforcement Resources Committee, the CPA Exam Transition Task Force, the Strategic Planning Task Force, the Restructuring Issues Task Force and the Accountancy Stakeholders Working Group. A former president, secretary and treasurer of the Nevada State Board of Accountancy, Neilon has also served as the legislative chairperson of the Nevada Society of CPAs and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs. A founding shareholder of Casey Neilon Inc., Neilon has assisted firms in restructuring their organizations, minimizing tax obligations and providing for long-term growth and stability.

    Thuy T. Barron, CPA, of Milwaukee, WI, was elected Great Lakes regional director and appointed as chair of NASBA’s Inclusion Committee. A managing director at Deloitte Tax LLP, Barron has a demonstrated history in the Global Employer Services (GES) tax practice, including mobility tax and human resources consulting. She has developed strong business development skills advising clients on developing mobility programs to align with business strategies, assisting with issues surrounding tax, compensation and benefits, global payroll, global equity and rewards, and employee and employer tax compliance. Barron is also an inclusive leader who serves on the GES and Milwaukee Office Inclusion Councils, driving diversity and inclusion strategy. She is a board member of the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board, member of the NASBA Relations with Member Boards Committee and a former member of NASBA’s CEO Selection Advisory Committee.

    Nancy Glynn, CPA, CFE, of Henrico, VA, was elected executive directors’ liaison and appointed as chair of the NASBA Executive Directors Committee for 2024-2025. Glynn is the executive director of the Virginia Board of Accountancy. Prior to joining the Board, she was the chief compliance and operations officer with a national healthcare-related nonprofit. In that capacity, she led the development, execution and revision of the organization’s operations to ensure they met industry standards and regulations. She previously served as a member of the Executive Directors Committee from 2021-2023. Glynn is a certified public accountant, certified fraud examiner and certified compliance and ethics professional.

    Haley Lyons, CPA, of Eugene, OR, was elected Pacific regional director. Lyons was also appointed to serve as chair of NASBA’s Communications Committee and as a member of the Relations with Member Boards Committee. Lyons is a partner at Kernutt Stokes LLP and has been with the firm since 2007. As partner, she leads the firm’s Virtual Accounting Department, which includes both client accounting services and accounting software solutions. She is very active in her profession and community through her service on the Oregon Board of Accountancy, as president of the board for the Alvord Taylor Foundation and as a school advisory committee member for Saint Paul Catholic School. Her professional affiliations include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants.

    Melissa Ruff, CPA, of Lincoln, NE, was elected Central regional director. Ruff is an audit managing director with Deloitte & Touche, LLP and has over 25 years of experience providing audit services. She was recently appointed to the Nebraska State Board of Public Accountancy by Governor Jim Pillen to serve a second four-year term as an active permit holder from the 1st Congressional District. She is also the current chair of the Nebraska Board and the chair of the NASBA Enforcement Resources Committee. Ruff previously served on NASBA’s Audit and Administration and Finance committees and will serve as a member of the Relations with Member Boards Committee.

    Wilhelmus J. Schaffers, CPA, of Birmingham, AL, was elected Southeast regional director. Schaffers began his career with KPMG in audit practice. He later joined EY in 1996 and was admitted into the partnership in 2003. He retired from the firm in 2021, after 25 years of service. In 2021, Schaffers joined a start-up, Insurtech, as co-owner and CFO. He is also the CFO of Amedex Assurance Company Corp. Schaffers has served on the Alabama State Board of Public Accountancy from 2018 to the present. Currently, he serves as chair of NASBA’s Audit Committee and as a member of NASBA’s Relations with Member Boards Committee. Schaffers has also served on NASBA’s Enforcement Resources and Standard-Setting and Professional Trends Advisory committees.

    Gerald P. Weinstein, CPA, Ph.D., of Pepper Pike, OH, has been elected as director-at-large. Weinstein is a former NASBA Great Lakes regional director and a former chair of NASBA’s Relations with Member Boards Committee (2023-2024) and CBT Administration Committee (2022-2023). He has also served on NASBA’s Communications Committee. Weinstein is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Ohio Society of CPAs and the American Accounting Association. He serves on the AICPA Board of Examiners and one of the AICPA Board of Examiners’ Content committees. He also maintains a professional practice, serving family-owned businesses, not-for-profit entities, and individuals with accounting and tax services.
