A holder of the Chartered Accountant credential may be eligible to sit for the International Qualification Examination (IQEX) if he or she is a member in good standing of CAANZ and meets the eligibility criteria set forth in the December 2018 Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).

Residency

You must be a citizen of, or hold a visa granting legal residency in Australia or New Zealand. Your application will not be complete without a copy of your passport or visa.

Member in Good Standing

You must be a member in good standing with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). Your application will not be complete without a Letter of Good Standing.

Education

You must hold a baccalaureate or higher degree and one of the following:

  • Have successfully completed ICAA’s Professional Year Programme
  • Have successfully completed NZICA’s Professional Accounting School
  • Have successfully completed the CAANZ Chartered Accountants Program

Examination

You must have successfully completed one of the following:

  • the full capstone final examination for your legacy credential
  • the five modules of the CAANZ’s CA Program

Experience

You must meet the following experience requirements:

  • have completed a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience prior to obtaining the CAANZ CA credential and being admitted to membership; AND
  • have completed an additional 2 years and 8 months of relevant work experience – which includes 2 years’ experience providing public accounting services – after obtaining the CA credential and being admitted to membership in CAANZ. Note: a completed Verification of Work Experience form will be needed in order to complete the application for the IQEX.

Continuing Education

You must be in compliance with the continuing professional development (CPD) requirements of CAANZ.

Materials to Be Submitted

The following documents must be submitted to support your application:

  • Letter of Good Standing from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand
  • To confirm the additional experience after membership has been completed, you will need to submit a Verification of Experience form.
  • If the supervisor that signs your Verification of Experience form is not licensed as a CPA in the U.S., you will need to submit a Verification of Supervisor’s Licensure form.
  • A copy of your passport to document your citizenship status with Australia or New Zealand. If you are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, you will need to submit a copy of your visa granting legal residency in Australia or New Zealand.

Exclusions

Chartered Accountant Australia and New Zealand CAs who obtained their CA credential by qualifying under a reciprocal agreement that CAANZ (or ICAA or NZICA) may have with another professional accountancy organization are not eligible under this agreement. This includes all mutual recognition agreements, reciprocal membership agreements, and similar agreements which CAANZ, or ICAA or NZICA may have or have had at any time.
