Whether you are looking to embark on a new position at a firm, or perhaps even an internship, it is time to understand what today’s firms are looking for in a candidate. The key is to not only stand out but to demonstrate that you are a qualified, viable candidate that any organization would be lucky to hire.

A significant attribute is your ability to work on a team. Cooperating with and listening to others, showing dependability and adaptability, and displaying a positive attitude are instrumental to success in the workplace.

Your work ethic is another big factor. Recruiters consider your undergraduate GPA as an indicator of work ethic. They’ll also consider the extracurricular activities you were involved in throughout college. Show firms that you are serious about working in the profession by working hard in your studies and joining related groups, committees and associations that benefit your desired field.

Are you a good problem solver? Be sure to include that in the conversation. Natural problem solvers are an asset to any workplace, especially in accounting. Accounting professionals are an essential part of financial decisions, and it is their responsibility to help steer firms and clients in the right direction – despite problems or unforeseen issues. Therefore, your ability to think quickly and well under pressure is a great asset. Be your own greatest advocate and firms are sure to see your potential!
