As a young professional, there are many moving parts to your career. School transcripts, referral letters and resumes are a few examples of items that will help you make a first impression to potential employers, but have you ever thought about how your social media usage and image could affect you?

Even if your social media profiles are private, those who do follow you and have access to your posts and profiles can easily screenshot and disseminate any content that you share. This could make the content you’ve shared available to potential employers in ways you may not realize. You never know how someone who follows you or who you interact with online may be connected to a company or individual that you cross in your professional path!

Another important item to note is that when you interact with companies, organizations and brands on social media, real people see and read what you post. For example, when you interact with or mention NASBA via comments, tweets or DMs, there are NASBA staff that see who you are and what you are communicating. If you tag NASBA in any comments or posts that use inappropriate language or conduct, staff have the right to make a note of this and even block or ban you from interacting with NASBA profiles. This can limit your access to pertinent information and updates regarding your CPA Exam journey. Also, members of NASBA’s professional audience (board members, active CPAs, etc.), who could be your potential employers, may see your inappropriate comments when NASBA is mentioned or tagged.

Remember, social media is a part of your personal and professional reputation. It is common for employers to do a Google search of your name and skim through your profiles. Be sure that you represent yourself in a way that you would feel comfortable allowing your employer to see. Don’t let digital negligence impact your career!
