National Award Distinguishes North Carolina Business and Minority Leader

Annual “Being A Difference Award” bestowed to Nathan T. Garrett

Nashville, TN., May 15, 2008 — The NASBA Center for the Public Trust (CPT) presented its highest honor to Nathan T. Garrett for embodying principled leadership in the face of difficult challenges and originating innovative responses to ethical challenges on Tuesday, May 13 in Durham, North Carolina. The Center established the Being A Difference Award in 2006 to recognize individuals who distinguish themselves by demonstrating ethical leadership and high standards of social responsibility. “It is through many years of work that I painted the picture of my life,” Garrett remarked. “I am glad that the Center for Public Trust and others have seen my life as I could not see it, and placed a value on it that I did not know was there.”

Garrett’s career canvases more than 40-years of principled leadership and success in advancing the accounting profession, minority businesses and higher education. He is founder and former executive director of the Foundation for Community Development (FCD).

The FCD was created in 1963 to “break the cycle of poverty” that plagued many North Carolina residents.

Garrett contributes to his community in various additional capacities. He is chairman emeritus for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance and a trustee emeritus for Duke University. He previously served as a member of the Durham County Board of Commissioners, president of the North Carolina Association for Minority Businesses and chairman for the board of trustees at Fayetteville State University.

On a national scale, Garrett served as chairman for the Minority Development Advisory Committee to the US Secretary of Commerce, chair of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy and president of the National Association of Minority CPA Firms. Garrett earned his A.B. in psychology from Yale University, completed postgraduate work in accounting and business at Wayne State University and received his law degree from North Carolina Central University.

He and his wife, Wanda, reside in Durham, North Carolina and have three children, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
